Recommended Resources

Week 1 – Texas & Bluebonnets

I found both of these books at my local library and we read them in association with our study about the state flower of Texas – the bluebonnet.

Lady Bird Johnson – by Charnan Simon (The picture is not the actual book cover.)

This book tells about President Johnson and his wife (both from Texas).  It gives information about preservation of Texas wildflowers, such as the bluebonnets.

The Legend of the Bluebonnet by Tomie DePaola

This book goes along well with the Native American study for week 1 as well as the emphasis on the bluebonnet.

Weeks 2-3: Spanish Conquistadors & the Alamo

Voices of the Alamo, by Sherry Garland

This book is an excellent resource for teaching children about what happened at the Alamo.  It presents so much information in an easy to read format.  It begins with Native Americans, mentions Spaniards, Mexicans, Texians, and modern Texans.

In this book, you will find a step by step how to draw the Alamo.  It also has how to draw the United States, breaking it up into sections (colonies, Louisiana Purchase, Republic of Texas, etc.).  It has tips on drawing pioneers and cowboys.

Week 4: General Info about Texas

L is for Lone Star by Carol Crane, Illustrated by Alan Stacy

This book is full of facts about Texas – history, geography, people, government, and state symbols.
